North America 4G Equipment Market Outlook: Key Growth Drivers

0
19

North America continues to maintain a highly advanced wireless communications ecosystem, supported by extensive mobile infrastructure, strong operator investments, high smartphone penetration, and growing demand for reliable connectivity. While the region is rapidly transitioning toward 5G and 5G-Advanced, LTE remains an important component of network infrastructure, particularly for broad-area coverage, legacy device support, enterprise connectivity, and network capacity. The continued modernization of wireless infrastructure across the US and Canada is therefore creating opportunities for equipment suppliers.

The 4G Equipment Market Size is projected to reach US$577.48 billion by 2034 from US$137.86 billion in 2025, expanding at a CAGR of 17.25% during 2026–2034. The addressable opportunity is estimated at US$2,987.39 billion during the forecast period. Within this global expansion, North America and particularly the US remain strategically important because of their sophisticated telecom infrastructure, high data consumption, widespread LTE deployment, and continuous investment in wireless network capacity.

US Network Modernization Supports Continued Equipment Demand

The US represents one of the most technologically advanced wireless communications environments globally. Major operators have invested heavily in network expansion, spectrum utilization, small cells, macro sites, and advanced radio infrastructure. Although 5G deployment has become a major priority, LTE continues to serve as an important foundation for nationwide connectivity.

According to the Wireless Infrastructure Association, US cellular companies invested more than US$10.2 billion in expanding network capacity and coverage during 2025, excluding spectrum, maintenance, and ongoing operating expenditure. The country had approximately 254,850 macrocell sites and 198,100 outdoor small cells at the end of 2025.

These infrastructure investments create opportunities for equipment vendors involved in radio access networks, antennas, base stations, small cells, transmission equipment, and network optimization.

Growing Mobile Data Traffic Is a Key Driver

Increasing mobile data consumption is one of the strongest drivers supporting wireless infrastructure investment across the US. Consumers increasingly depend on mobile networks for video streaming, cloud applications, gaming, social media, digital payments, remote work, and connected-device services.

The growth of AI-enabled applications and data-intensive services is further increasing network capacity requirements. Operators must continually upgrade and optimize infrastructure to accommodate traffic growth while maintaining network reliability and quality of service.

For equipment manufacturers, this creates opportunities to provide higher-capacity radio solutions, energy-efficient infrastructure, advanced antennas, and equipment capable of operating across multiple generations of cellular technology.

LTE Remains Relevant Alongside 5G

The rapid rollout of 5G does not immediately eliminate the need for LTE infrastructure. Instead, North American operators are managing increasingly complex multi-generation networks. LTE continues to provide broad coverage and supports millions of connected devices, while 5G is progressively handling higher-capacity and lower-latency applications.

The Global mobile Suppliers Association reported in March 2026 that LTE remains a core technology in Northern America even as operators increasingly concentrate on 5G modernization. The region has also moved toward widespread 2G and 3G shutdowns, allowing operators to focus resources on LTE and 5G network modernization.

This transition can support demand for LTE equipment upgrades, replacement hardware, network integration, and solutions that enable efficient coexistence between 4G and 5G technologies.

Rural Connectivity and Coverage Expansion

Connectivity expansion across rural and underserved communities remains an important opportunity in the US. Wireless infrastructure can provide an efficient alternative where deploying extensive wired networks is difficult or expensive.

The broader development of fixed wireless access, rural broadband initiatives, and improved mobile coverage is encouraging operators to expand infrastructure beyond densely populated metropolitan areas. Although newer deployments increasingly emphasize 5G, established LTE infrastructure continues to contribute to wide-area coverage and connectivity.

This creates opportunities for equipment suppliers providing macro base stations, antennas, radio units, small cells, and network optimization technologies.

Enterprise and Industrial Wireless Connectivity

US enterprises are increasingly adopting wireless connectivity for manufacturing, logistics, utilities, transportation, healthcare, public safety, and other mission-critical applications. Private wireless networks and industrial connectivity solutions are becoming important components of digital transformation strategies.

North America has also emerged as a significant region for private wireless deployment. Nokia reports that it serves approximately 960 private wireless customers globally, with 25% located in North America. The company also identifies itself as a major RAN supplier in the region, supplying LTE and 5G RAN to four of the five major US mobile operators.

These developments demonstrate how established cellular technologies continue to support enterprise applications while operators and businesses transition toward advanced network architectures.

Key Companies in North America and the US

The competitive landscape includes major global telecommunications equipment providers with significant operations and customer relationships across North America. Key companies include Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei Technologies, ZTE Corporation, Samsung Electronics, Cisco Systems, NEC Corporation, Fujitsu, CommScope, and Qualcomm.

Ericsson has a particularly significant US presence, with its networks supporting wireless traffic across all 50 states. The company operates R&D and innovation facilities across the country, including locations focused on antenna systems, semiconductors, AI, and network technologies.

Nokia also maintains a substantial US presence and supplies LTE and 5G radio access network solutions to major operators. Its North American operations include R&D, manufacturing, optical networking, mobile infrastructure, and enterprise connectivity activities.

North America Future Outlook

The North American outlook remains closely connected to the evolution of 5G, private wireless networks, AI-enabled connectivity, and network modernization. The region has already achieved high levels of 5G adoption, with North America expected to have the world's highest 5G subscription penetration. At the same time, LTE continues to provide an important connectivity layer for established networks and applications.

In the US, continued investment in wireless capacity, rural coverage, enterprise connectivity, network resilience, and infrastructure modernization is expected to sustain opportunities for equipment suppliers. The convergence of LTE, 5G, edge computing, IoT, and AI is also expected to encourage operators to adopt flexible infrastructure capable of supporting multiple use cases.

As wireless networks become increasingly critical to economic activity, public safety, industrial operations, and digital services, investment in network equipment is expected to remain strategically important. North America is therefore positioned to remain a key regional contributor to the broader growth trajectory through 2034.
